UCW Full Case Study

This case study discusses the Student Affairs and Registrar's Office intra-department Coaching Intensive designed and deployed by Ken Cappie and his team of support coaches. The program was designed to address communication, collaboration, and siloed working concerns, particularly post-pandemic in a hybrid work environment.

The coaching program consisted of three virtual departmental team and three full group cohort coaching sessions within four weeks, along with individual 1:1 coaching sessions for employees. The program began with an initial intake session with respective team leaders individually and in tandem to understand the issues better.

All team members were encouraged to take the Clifton Strengths Top 5 assessment to obtain fresh and alternative views about themselves and their colleagues. This helped the coaching team identify areas for improvement and tailor coaching sessions to address specific needs.

The program was kicked off with a live session to get everyone feeling connected and excited about the program. It was followed by a post-coaching survey to measure the immediate impact of the program, and the entire program was delivered with relevant written and audio support learning materials to enhance the participant experience.

Pre-coaching attitudes showed that employees had strong self-perceptions, but during the coaching program, a considerable disconnect was discovered between how employees perceived themselves and how they showed up at work. The pandemic and remote work had impacted employees' ability to work together effectively.

Through the coaching and support of the coaching team, the UCW leadership and their teams were able to align around a shared vision and strategy, improve communication and collaboration, and foster a more positive and inclusive culture. As a result, interdepartmental communication greatly improved, leading to an increase in productivity and improvements within teams. Employees reported improved communication, better relationships with colleagues, and a stronger sense of cohesion within their teams.

Overall, the Student Affairs and Registrar's Office intra-department Summer Coaching Intensive was a successful leadership coaching program that addressed important concerns about communication, collaboration, and siloed working. The benefits of the coaching program were immediately visible and sustained long after completion.
