Strategic Success with Trust and Family
A three-year advisory and coaching engagement with Pacific Arbour Retirement and Pacific Alps Management — where economic strategy and family dynamics met, and grew together.
The Client
Rainer Müller is the CEO of Pacific Arbour Retirement (PARC), a leading developer of luxury independent senior living communities in British Columbia. PARC operates under Pacific Alps Management (PAM), a Zurich-based family enterprise and investment office.
Rainer engaged me as a Senior Advisor to help PARC diversify into new market segments and strengthen investment opportunities in Canada — a mandate that quickly expanded to include executive coaching for both him and his family.

The Challenge
PARC had established itself as a premier choice in luxury senior living, but the leadership team wanted to explore new market segments and investment avenues in Canada. The work required both rigorous economic analysis and careful judgment about where the brand’s reputation could travel.
At the same time, the decisions were not purely commercial. Because PAM is a family enterprise office, strategy and family interests were deeply intertwined. Rainer needed counsel he could trust with both boardroom questions and more intimate conversations.
The Approach
The engagement was structured as a flexible three-year retainer, allowing me to move between advisory, planning, and coaching as the situation demanded. The work unfolded across six connected areas — each one feeding the others.
01
Mapping the Landscape
We began with a clear-eyed view of PARC’s market position, PAM’s investment appetite, and the family’s longer-term priorities — so strategy could rest on fact rather than assumption.
02
Identifying New Opportunities
Through ongoing market analysis and due diligence, we surfaced and prioritised investment and diversification opportunities that aligned with PARC’s expertise and the family’s risk profile.
03
Strategic Planning & Alignment
I helped craft strategic plans that connected business objectives with family values, ensuring that growth decisions stayed coherent with the long-term vision across both the company and the family office.
04
Representation & Relationship Building
Acting as a trusted representative at industry events and in discussions with legal and investment partners, I opened doors to strategic relationships that supported PARC’s expansion in the Canadian market.
05
Coaching Through Complexity
What began as economic advisory gradually became more personal. I served as a sounding board for Rainer and his family on decisions that carried both financial and emotional weight — handled with complete discretion.
06
Sustained Decision Support
Over three years, the engagement provided a steady rhythm of research, analysis, and counsel — giving Rainer the clarity and confidence to move decisively when the right opportunities appeared.
At the Heart of the Work
“What began as a question of markets became a conversation about trust, legacy, and what kind of future the family wanted to build.”
Ken Cappie — Senior Advisor & Coach
The Result
The engagement supported PARC’s successful expansion and growth in the Canadian market, with clear decision-making pathways for Rainer and the family office. New investment opportunities were identified, evaluated, and advanced with the backing of robust research and strategic planning.
Beyond the business outcomes, the relationship created a confidential space for Rainer to think through decisions that carried weight for both the company and the family. The result was not only stronger strategy, but steadier leadership — and a family office better positioned for the next generation.
Why this Worked
A single trusted voice across domains
Family enterprises and their operating companies often move between two worlds: the operational demands of the business and the private concerns of the family. Advisors who can only speak to one side tend to leave gaps.
This engagement worked because I could hold both. I brought analytical rigour to investment and strategy questions, while also creating room for the personal conversations — about legacy, risk, succession, and purpose — that family leadership inevitably requires.
That combination of commercial clarity and human discretion gave Rainer a relationship he could rely on for the long arc of the work.
