Franklin’s Transition to Independent Art Consulting
Franklin’s Passion
The Client
Franklin is a senior art consultant and buyer with more than 25 years of experience. He leads a highly responsive team for a major global fashion and lifestyle brand — work he is passionate about, but in a role where he had begun to feel that his contribution and market value were not fully recognised.
He wanted to move into independent consulting, putting his experience, reputation, and creative judgment to work on his own terms and making a greater impact in the marketplace.
The Challenge
The central question was how to pursue independent consulting without walking away from the security and stability of his current role. Franklin was uncertain how to begin the transition while continuing to meet his existing responsibilities fully.
He also needed to identify the less productive parts of his workload and delegate them, creating the time and headspace to focus on the higher-value consulting work he wanted to pursue.
Mapping the next chapter, in private
The Approach
Transition to Purpose is a structured but flexible 1:1 coaching engagement for accomplished professionals at an inflection point. With Franklin, the work moved across six interconnected areas — each helping turn decades of experience into a practice he genuinely wanted to build.
01
Clarifying the New Path
We began by identifying which parts of Franklin’s work brought him the greatest sense of fulfilment and using that to clarify the direction of his consulting practice.
02
Leveraging Existing Strengths
Franklin already had decades of experience, a strong reputation, and deep industry relationships. The work was about protecting that capacity — delegating lower-value responsibilities so his expertise could be focused where it created the most value.
03
Building Confidence
Through structured dialogue and reflection, Franklin developed the confidence to begin moving toward his consulting venture incrementally, without putting his current role at risk.
04
Creating a Strategic Plan
Together, we developed a roadmap for the transition — one that balanced his current responsibilities while creating room for new opportunities aligned with his longer-term vision.
05
Connecting Passion to Profit
We explored how Franklin could align his creative interests with a financial model that would make the new venture both personally fulfilling and commercially sustainable.
06
Navigating the Transition
The work continued as Franklin began making the shift, helping him stay focused and deliberate as he balanced his existing role with the demands and opportunities of building something new.
What Franklin Said
“Ken challenges me to think differently and explore new opportunities that align with my passions. His ability to sense what excites me and help me connect my creative work to financial success has been invaluable. Ken’s guidance on practical next steps and understanding my market value has given me the confidence to begin this transition.”

The Result
Franklin is well into the transition. He is selectively taking on high-value consulting projects, drawing on his existing reputation, and building a practice aligned with both his creative interests and financial goals.
The structure of the coaching engagement has helped him approach the transition deliberately, creating room for new opportunities while maintaining the professional and financial foundation he has built.
Why this worked
Industry-Specific Insight
Ken’s experience in the international art world gave Franklin the benefit of working with someone who understood his professional environment. Familiarity with the relationships, commercial realities, and institutional dynamics of the art world meant the conversation could move quickly to the issues that mattered: positioning, networking, client development, and the practicalities of building an independent practice.
Rather than starting with the basics of the industry, they could focus on how Franklin might draw on his experience and relationships to create new opportunities.
That meant Franklin wasn’t figuring it out alone. He was building his consulting path with context, clarity, and a deeper understanding of how to translate his experience into a viable independent practice.
