Breaking Through Conditioning
A Look at Contents vs. States of Consciousness
Have you ever wondered why you feel stuck in old patterns, even though you're aware they no longer serve you? Or perhaps you've found yourself searching for happiness, only to realize it’s always just out of reach? These questions point to something deeper within us — the relationship between the contents and the states of our consciousness.
In coaching sessions, we often explore the concept of conditioning and how it shapes our thoughts and beliefs. But what does it really mean to change your beliefs, and why is it so difficult? To answer this, let’s take a deeper dive into the distinction between the Contents of Consciousness and the States of Consciousness.
The Contents of Consciousness are the thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and conditioned patterns that make up our personal experience. They are the "stuff" of our everyday minds, shaped by our upbringing, culture, and past experiences. These contents include:
Fear
Pleasure (the drive for it)
Security (the need for it)
Separation (feeling we’re isolated)
Motives (what drives us to do stuff or make decisions)
The constant search for happiness (which, in itself, is a content — as happiness is actually a state, not a goal to be attained)
These contents often cloud or obscure the States of Consciousness, which are deeper, universal aspects of our true nature. Unlike the contents, states are not shaped by personal conditioning. They are the natural foundation of consciousness that exists beneath all the noise of thought and belief, always available to us. These states include:
Peace
Beauty
Love
Compassion
True Happiness (a natural state, not something to be sought after)
Contents cloud our natural state. Imagine a fog that blocks the view of a vast, clear sky. Our fears, desires, and conditioned beliefs act like that fog, preventing us from seeing the peace, love, and happiness that are always present within us. But here’s the key: Awareness is the way out.
When we practice awareness, self-inquire, or work with a coach a guide or even talk with a good friend we begin to observe the contents of our consciousness for what they are — temporary thoughts and emotional reactions that do not define who we truly are. By recognizing this, we can reconnect with the deeper states of consciousness that are our true essence.
As a coach, I guide individuals through this process, helping them understand the difference between what they think they are and what they truly are. Through awareness, you can start to dissolve the cloud of conditioning and reconnect with the peace and clarity that’s always there.
Are you ready to break free from limiting beliefs and reconnect with your true self? If you're feeling stuck or uncertain, let’s talk. In our coaching sessions, I’ll help you explore your unique path to awareness, guiding you toward lasting peace, love, and happiness.
